Entry of private vehicles into the airport is free for 10 minutes, a rule the "VIP vehicles" flout with impunity. Some of the rule-flout cars had boards attached to the windshields stating they were ferrying government officials or MLAs. In stark contrast, vehicles that had come to pick up "ordinary citizens" were shooed away by attendants and guards hired by the Airports Authority of India and civic police volunteers of the Bidhannagar commissionerate. An airport official said they lacked enough personnel to enforce the "no-parking" rule. "Policemen on duty will be simply shooed away by the private security officers or drivers of these people if they are asked to take the car away to the designated parking zone," the officer said.
