Dairy farmers could get a top-up on the farm gate milk price if they meet certain environmental targets, Fonterra says. From June, Fonterra is upping farmer payments by up to 10 cents, depending on their sustainability credentials and milk quality. The total amount paid to farmers would not change but a portion of the farm gate milk price would be redistributed between farmers based on individual farm achievements set against the programme targets. Alliance’s Handpicked Lamb programme assessed the eating quality of premium export lamb destined for markets in Asia and North America. Farmers can earn an extra 10c a kilogram on top an existing 15c premium paid to farmers that raise lamb without antibiotics.
