Football stars suffer hate abuse with no action in majority of cases

Football stars including Brentford’s Ivan Toney and West Ham’s Hawa Cissoko have been targeted by trolls with racist abuse after games (Picture: Getty/metro.co.uk)Ivan Toney is among football stars who have been named as victims of racial abuse at top flight clubs in a catalogue of reported hate offences. In the vast majority of cases, no police or court action was taken or no outcome was recorded. The offence is given as ‘Sec 4A homophobic abuse’ but the victim is said to have been ‘not willing to progress the matter any further’. At a Spurs game against Brighton in April there were two separate reports; one of ‘racial abuse towards Japanese players and the Jewish community’ and another of ‘racist, homophobic abuse heard by informant’.
