You may think it is only the vulnerable and the foolish who fall for fraud. You’d be wrong. Any one of us can fall victim to these scams — it just takes a moment to be caught off-guard, unawares, and to make a simple but life-changing mistake. Last week the annual crime statistics were published and since 2019 fraud has risen by just shy of a quarter (24 per cent). It now seems undeniable that multiple lockdowns provided fertile ground for a spike in scams and fraud.
