Tata Steel, which owns the huge Port Talbot steelworks in South Wales, could benefit from Project Birch, an initiative to save strategically vital companies. A spokesman for Community steelworkers' union said: “It is imperative that the support package for Tata Steel is secured. “The Government must ensure that our steel industry gets the support it needs to survive and then thrive as the UK recovers. “ Labour has always championed British steel and, long before the coronavirus crisis started, we had been calling on the government to support the industry and its workers. Labour MP Stephen Kinnock, whose Aberavon constituency includes Port Talbot, said: “The UK steel industry will be absolutely critical to rebuilding the British economy as we come out of the pandemic.
