Fiorillo was speaking at the first Bright Future: Mental Health Recovery Conference held by Healthy Minds Canada because, she told the Star, she wants people to know “there’s a possibility of getting out” and even a happy ending. Fiorillo says she was fortunate to have support at the ready, as well as a love of and background in academia to fall back on. It’s why she’s using it “to help mitigate the effects” of a system that many feel is stacked against them. She’s been through so many of the same things as they have, she said. Though she didn’t go into detail then, she has spoken at length before about her struggles with bulimia.
