Partners sometimes block each other from attempting change, taking the role of “gatekeeper” and believing it’s safer to do things “their way”. Don’t let your inner people-pleaser trick you into overcommitting to work at the expense of your own sense of calm. Some workplaces are just toxic environments, and instead of tying yourself in knots trying to make things work, sometimes it’s best to just ... bow out. In these cases, it may help to talk to someone – a family friend, a community elder, or a professional. This can also help the family realise that the symptom may be present in every family member.
