The current storm of fury sweeping Mexico, after a roll back in fuel subsidies at the turn of the new year, is no exception. In the last decade we have seen it in Malaysia, India, Nigeria and a handful other countries where fuel subsidies in part support household budgets, small industry and agriculture. As a result, tortilla prices - the country’s staple food - have already begun going up in several cities. In 2007, a similar spike in tortilla prices had triggered nationwide protests. It’s unfortunate for the people but Mexico had it coming for years.
