It’s one night, so it’s hard to read too much into it. But I thought the Republican strategy was clear enough: Do everything you can to shore up the president’s standing, including on coronavirus and race, and rev up the base on crime and fear of the left. The attacks on Biden seemed tailored to complement that strategy by focusing more on his ties to the left and his record on crime than his mental acuity. It’ll be interesting to see how it evolves from here.
