In a statement Wednesday, National Links Trust officials said they are “fundamentally in disagreement with the administration’s characterization” and “devastated” by the decision. McCartin said National Links Trust has complied with terms of its lease and that the nonprofit is exploring its legal options. The termination process has been led by the Interior Department rather than the National Park Service, the agency that signed the original lease. In the termination notice, the Interior Department also said National Links Trust owes the government as much as $8.8 million in unpaid rent. Behind the scenes, administration officials have floated an expansive vision for East Potomac that goes well beyond routine repairs.
