Galesburg in World War II: Local men continue to join military in December 1940


The war may have seemed far away to most people in Galesburg, and many probably still did not think the United States would join the fray. But either way, area men continued to join the military, which The Register-Mail reported on. On the 19th, it was relayed that eight more men had joined the Army at the Galesburg recruiting station. On the 21st, the Register-Mail reported that on that day, spurred by warm temperatures, “thousands” of shoppers swarmed downtown Galesburg to spend their money.
