It's claimed that Byrne used money owed to Southgate and former Chelsea and England winger Joe Cole to purchase a £25million property in London without their permission. Southgate had been waiting six months for Byrne to repay him prior to their parting of ways at the start of the year. Southgate considered his future after England were knocked out of the World Cup by France in December 2022 before deciding to stay on. Southgate ruled out making a decision on his long-term future before this summer's tournament, which take places in Germany.
