In a simple term, gas flaring is the burning of natural gas, coal and petroleum. Exposure to air pollutants released by gas flaring has been linked to cancer and lung damage, as well as neurological and reproductive problems. Andy Irivri, a chartered accountant from the Niger Delta, is not hopeful for the end of gas flaring by 2020. Although gas flaring was officially banned in 1984, the government has repeatedly failed to fulfil promises to end the practice. It is as sure as 99 precedes 100 that more revenue will be generated if gas flaring is reduced.
