German Economy to Contract Again Slightly in 4Q, Government Says

By Ed Frankl and Andreas KisslerGermany's economy is expected to contract again in the current quarter, cementing a recession in Europe's largest economy, according to a fresh government forecast published Wednesday. The German economy already shrank 0.1% in the third quarter, and indicators to date--including industrial production and incoming orders--suggest another slight decline in gross domestic product in the final three months, the economy ministry said in a monthly report. "Following the decline in GDP in the third quarter, current economic indicators also point to weak overall economic development in the fourth," it said. Growth should return in 2024, however, with sentiment indicators for both companies and households suggesting a slightly more positive outlook, the ministry said. Economists polled by FactSet see the German economy declining by 0.2% in the fourth quarter of this year.
