GANGNEUNG, South Korea—Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany took pairs skating gold here in a closely fought four-way contest with pairs from China, Canada, and Olympic Athletes from Russia. The pairs competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics has been marked by an unusually high caliber of skating, a combination of veteran skaters and relative newcomers from powerful skating dynasties in the top four teams. Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov are the newest generation in Russian pairs skating, while Sui Wenjing and Han Cong stem from a younger but increasingly powerful Chinese pairs program. “I really want to get a gold medal. Americans Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim completed a quadruple twist but struggled with other elements in their “Ghost” free program to finish 15th.
