Ghana’s cocoa yield booms as sector cuts carbon emissions


Ghana’s cocoa industry is reaping the benefits of a climate-smart programme aimed at reducing deforestation and carbon emissions. A World Bank feature on the sector, however, said cocoa farmers in Ghana are improving yields and mitigating climate change by adopting climate-smart cocoa practices while curbing deforestation. The World Bank credits the Ghana government’s programme – known as The Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme (GCFRP) – which has empowered farmers to improve their cocoa plantations. Reducing carbon emissions sees cocoa farmers benefitIn January 2023, Ghana became the second country in Africa after Mozambique to receive payments from the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) for reducing emissions through REDD+ (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries). “FCPF paid Ghana $4.8m for reducing some 972,000 tons of carbon emissions during the first monitoring period (June to December 2019) of their emissions reduction payment agreement.
