Giant mosquitoes hit Queensland as experts warn outbreak of incurable disease spread insects

Toxorhynchites - or elephant mosquitos - have been reported near the Gold Coast in Queensland at Coombabah, Paradise Point and Biggera Waters. There has been an alarming spike in mosquito numbers across Queensland, prompting a warning the state could suffer an outbreak of the incurable Ross River virus. The monster insect was found in a Killara backyard on the Gold Coast, a region which is also suffering a spike in standard mosquito populations. Swarms of the insects have prompted local government action up north, around the hot spots of Coombabah, Paradise Point, and Biggera Waters. Gold Coast Councillor Cameron Caldwell said area has suffered 'plague proportions of mozzies' in the past week.
