Giant pumpkin record hopes squashed for Ian and Stuart Paton of Pinetops in Lymington

LYMINGTON twins behind the UK’s biggest ever pumpkin have struck disaster after all six of their prize-chasing squash failed to reach maturity this year. Ian and Stuart Paton, who have been growing the supersized fruit for the past 40 years, smashed their own UK record last autumn with an enormous 2,656lb pumpkin – weighing just 93lbs less than the current world record. Ian said: “At their peak they were gaining 700lb in 10 days – so they were certainly on track to be world record breakers. “We will get the world record one day – it is only a matter of time. Every year we get closer and closer, and we have absolutely no intention of stopping until we achieve the record.”
