TORONTO — Quebec author Eric Dupont’s path to this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize short list began with the absence of a name. Dupont asked his father who the woman was, but he refused to reveal her identity, insisting it was her story that was important. “We thought this book can work, but the people who defend it have to love it,” said Dupont. Dupont will join familiar names on the Giller short list — Esi Edugyan and Patrick DeWitt, both previous contenders for the prize. Last year’s Giller winner was American-born, Canadian poet Michael Redhill for his book “Bellevue Square.”
