Female pupils at Glenalmond have been barred from boarding in the gothic front quad until now Getty ImagesAfter more than 170 years as a purely male preserve, the front quad of Glenalmond College was opened up to girls yesterday (Gurpreet Narwan writes). The independent Perthshire school, founded in 1847 by William Gladstone, began accepting girls in 1991. But female pupils have been barred from boarding in the gothic front quad until now. The quad’s first female boarders arrived on the first day of the school term yesterday after a boys’ boarding house was converted into one for girls. Elaine Logan, the head teacher, said the change would ensure that girls were given the same access and opportunities as boys at a school where the gender split is now almost equal.
