The plea deal allowed him to avoid the death penalty, according to NBC News, and required him to register as a sex offender and pay restitution to victims or their families. DeAngelo, who is 74, terrorized California from 1975 to 1986, leaving behind 87 victims in 53 crimes across 11 counties in the state.
