Sri Lanka, despite being a self-proclaimed progressive country that values love and kindness, appears to be exceedingly slow in understanding these differences, and consequently, certain practices the world is trying to get rid of are still being continued and revered in Sri Lanka. According to the global movement “End Corporal Punishment”, 61 countries have fully prohibited corporal punishment, while 27 more countries have committed to reforming their laws to fully ban this practice. Statistics show that after 1996, there is a sharp increase in the number of countries banning corporal punishment. However, Sri Lanka is yet to take proper steps in that direction. The bottom line is, the country’s next generation should not fear to wrong because they fear punishment; they should do so because they know it is wrong.
