An ad from the 1890s sings the praises of the paper drinking straw, invented in Washington. “We’ve owned it for the last 17 years.”The Canadian company makes three types of straws: plastic, biodegradable and naturally compostable. The plastic straw has become a symbol of the way humans trash the environment in our search for convenience, even if experts point out that plastic straws aren’t the real problem.
