Google Builds AI to Help Ships and Whales Coexist Artificial intelligence trained to detect orca sounds in noisy waters is helping protect whales from vessel traffic. One model developed by Google AI, a division of the company dedicated to AI, is auto-detecting orca sounds underwater to warn ships and boats in the area to slow down or keep a distance. AI efforts are focused on learning marine mammal sounds, reducing collision between ships and whales, and automating the detection of large marine life in hard-to-reach areas of the world. Google’s AI model parses the ocean’s soundtrack, singling out orca sounds to alert the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans, or DFO, when whales are present.
