Google honors global Filipino artist Pacita Abad with vibrant doodle

MANILA, Philippines — Google on Friday paid tribute to late Filipina artist and feminist Pacita Abad, through a colorful doodle. “Abad went on to study painting and then traveled the world with her art supplies, from Bangladesh to Sudan, and the cultures she encountered had a profound influence on her ever-evolving artistic style,” Google said of Abad. Among her famous works were her 1979 series “Portraits of Cambodia,” and was credited for crafting 5,000 pieces of art. She also pioneered a painting technique called “trapunto,” where “she stuffed her canvases to create a sculptural effect and integrated culturally significant materials discovered during her travels, like shells and fabrics,” Google said. Abad succumbed to lung cancer in 2004.
