Government defeated in Court of Appeal after removing protections for vulnerable kids

Judges ruled Education Secretary Gavin Williamson acted unlawfully by failing to properly consult the Children’s Commissioner over the emergency powers in April. But they only contacted the Commissioner at 5.06pm on April 16 - eight days before the laws took force. In his ruling with two fellow judges, he wrote: “There was no good reason why that process should not have included the Children’s Commissioner and the other bodies. We will continue working with the Children’s Commissioner and children’s charities to provide the best possible support to vulnerable children.”
