NEW DELHI: Tax ombudsmen may be a thing of the past. The government is reviewing the set up and may scrap the post as it has found few takers.Ombudsmen were appointed to deal with taxpayer complaints on the recommendations of a committee comprising top revenue department officials. Similarly, the government is working towards reducing taxpayer interface and is cracking down on rude behaviour or delay in giving appellate orders as part of the revamp of the tax department. For instance, the process of filing returns and refunds is now automated with clear instructions not to hold back refunds. In addition, officials said, several of the processes such as refunds have been streamlined, resulting in few complaints.
