Govt. to revisit norms for brainstem death


The government made the submission when a writ petition filed by a girl aged two years, represented by her father Anilkumar T.G. The petition pointed out that the revised guidelines for certification of brainstem death were issued in view of the unverified allegation of malpractice in organ donations. The writ petition was later withdrawn. As per the revised guidelines, the board of medical experts should comprise two doctors outside the hospital where the brainstem death patient was undergoing treatment. The guidelines also mandated videotaping of both the apnoea test to validate the process of brainstem death certification.
