Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Exceeds Power Generation Targets in First 10 Months

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has surpasses expectations, generating over 2,700 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity in the last ten months, according to the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP). This initial production already contributes 16% to the nation's total electricity generation of 16,900 GWh for the ten-month period. With eleven more turbines scheduled for installation, Ethiopia anticipates a substantial 83% boost in its overall generating capacity upon their activation. The completed GERD project is expected to reach a 5,150 MW capacity, producing a staggering 15,760 GWh of electricity annually. GERD began generating electricity on Feb. 20, 2022, after its initial filling in July 2020.
