ATHENS—Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras unexpectedly called snap national elections on Sunday night after his ruling left-wing Syriza party suffered a heavy defeat in European elections to opposition conservatives. Mr. Tsipras, who has been the longest serving premier through Greece’s protracted financial crisis, decided to call early elections for June, rather than wait till the end of his term in October. The most likely date for national elections is June 30, according to officials.
