Looking for beauty in unexpected places is a creative reflex for Lindsey Adelman, the New York City lighting designer whose chandeliers have evoked comparisons to icicles, nights at the disco and heaps of post-season fishing tackle. Last fall, on a painting retreat with a friend to the French island of Belle-Île, Adelman found inspiration in the gnarled and wizened weeds they encountered on their daily coastal walks. “We were in raincoats, with our clippers, gathering plants we’d never seen before,” says the 52-year-old designer. “Kind of mean-looking plants, you know? That knew they could survive in that setting.
