Harris attended Howard University, a historically Black university in Washington. Katerina Shadrach, an 11-year-old South Asian and White American, told CNN at an August 2019 Harris rally that Harris was her role model. An aspiring US senator herself, Shadrach told Harris after the event of her ambition to chart a path like Harris'. In 2010, she became the first Black woman elected as California attorney general, and in 2016, she became only the second Black woman ever elected as a US senator. Harris' mother put it best: "Kamala, you may be the first to do many things, but make sure you're not the last."
