Weight loss expert Dr Eva Orsmond has expressed concern about children and adolescents who have gained weight during lockdown. The former Operation Transformation star urged parents to set a good example to children with their exercise and diet regime, with the Covid-19 pandemic expected to amplify already high rates of childhood obesity. Childhood obesity was described in the Who report last week at the European Congress on Obesity as “one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century”. Experts believe the pandemic is likely to negatively impact childhood obesity levels with school closures and lockdowns impacting access to school meals and physical activity times for children. Dr Orsmond is concerned childhood obesity in Ireland is becoming normalised.
