It’s mutations like these that cause scientists and public health officials to worry to worry. Even if the variant does not make Covid-19 a more deadly illness, a more transmissible variant will mean more people getting sick and more people dying. In the unlikely event that the new variant is able to evade the protection given by current Covid-19 vaccines, manufacturers will return to the development stage. Over 40 countries have already restricted travel from the U.K. in an attempt to stop the variant spreading.
