High house prices push buyers, developers to affordable South Waikato

The South Waikato district is on the verge of a new-build property boom which could send it back to its heyday. Quotable Value Limited figures show house prices in the district have risen by 32.2 per cent in 12 months with the average value now sitting at $445,764. South Waikato District Council economic development manager Paul Bowden said the council was actively working to get more farmland opened up for residential development to meet the high demand. “They are coming from Tauranga and Hamilton and it’s very easy to attract them at the moment. “From a housing developer’s perspective, they want to sell a product for as much as they can … what we are trying to encourage them to look at is having some affordable entry-level product as part of that, too.
