Tension erupted in Ullapara upazila on Monday after members of the local Hindu community staged a protest, alleging obstruction in the cremation of Mina Banik, wife of the late Ganesh Banik of Jhikira Mohalla. “We were forced to take my mother’s body to the upazila premises and protest,” said Santosh Babuk, the deceased’s son. Following the intervention of Upazila Nirbahi Officer ATM Arif, the cremation was completed peacefully around 11:00am. Residents alleged mismanagement and misappropriation of funds by the crematorium committee, which has undergone multiple name changes in recent years. Bablu Bhowmik denied the claims, citing official procedure as the reason for the initial delay.
