Hinkley C: Q&A

Why has Britain approved Hinkley Point? Today Britain’s 15 operational nuclear reactors supply 23 per cent of UK electricity. The government wants to build new nuclear plants which will also help meet ambitious targets to cut the UK’s carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. If built, Hinkley will supply 7 per cent of UK electricity. EDF says the two new Hinkley reactors will cost £18 billion and enter service around 2026.
