Hispanics are almost twice as likely as whites to have lost their jobs amid pandemic, poll finds

ADADEconomists predict that the picture will grow even more dire Friday when the Department of Labor releases the first jobs report covering an entire month of shutdowns. That’s a dramatic rise from last month’s report, which showed more than 700,000 jobs lost and the unemployment rate climbing from 3.5 percent to 4.4 percent. Hispanics suffered an especially sharp increase in the unemployment rate, from 4.4 percent to 6 percent. The Post-Ipsos poll finds younger and blue-collar workers, as well as those without college degrees, are most likely to have lost their jobs. Laid-off black and Hispanic workers are more than twice as likely as whites to report receiving food from a local school system or food bank.
