Hopes rise for spending-driven recovery

Good morning: Hopes that a consumer spending boom could drive Britain’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 crisis have been boosted after new figures showed that spending rose by 7.6 per cent in May compared with the same month in 2019. Consumers splashed out on food, drink and clothes as they started socialising again with friends and family, according to the latest Barclaycard survey, which has been published this morning. SponsoredThis rise in spending was the highest recorded by Barclaycard since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. The data in the closely watched survey relates to transactions between April 24 and May 21 on Barclaycard credit cards and Barclays debit cards. It covers almost half of all card transactions during the period.
