Domestic users paid €4bn of €5bn collected since 2015The Government has been accused of letting industrial energy users off the hook after it emerged that the lion’s share of Vat on electricity and gas bills is paid by households. The replies show that since 2015, over €5bn has been collected in Vat on electricity and gas bills from all users. Domestic users paid €4bn of that, with the rest paid by industry. Large energy users tend to pay much lower rates on their energy than consumers, because they can negotiate directly with their supplier and can skew their energy use to times when electricity is cheaper, such as at night.
