Based on a search of the Roper Center’s archive of polls, there were only a handful questions asked using the word “anger” or “angry” between 1935 and 1970. Since 2008, CNN has asked people ten times how angry they are “about the way things are going in the country today.” In 2008, 35% said they were very angry and another 40% said somewhat angry. In December 2017, the last time the question was asked, there was little change: 31% described themselves as very angry and another 37% somewhat angry. In their September survey, 25% were angry, 37% dissatisfied but not angry, 25% satisfied but not enthusiastic, and 7% enthusiastic. In another question about what made them most angry, respondents mentioned fake news, Donald Trump, gun control, and school shootings.
