Of all the things to worry about when uprooting your life to start a new job in a new country, having a haircut seems relatively small fry. Finding a home, family goodbyes and coaxing your partner into coming with you should probably take priority. However, when I discovered I was being sent to New York as a foreign correspondent for this newspaper, it felt absolutely crucial to seek out the best salon possible. This urge was only exacerbated when Style’s editor-in-chief, Lorraine Candy, gave me the once-over in the office and declared: “They’re going to eat you alive out there.” She was being cruel to be kind because it’s true: my unloved mousy hair, moth-eaten cardies and chipped nails are hardly Manhattan chic.
