The HBO series Watchmen starts off its story in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1921. A young boy sits watching a silent film in a theater as a siren wails in the distance. He’s watching Bass Reeves, one of America’s first Black U.S. deputy marshals, on-screen in pursuit of a crooked sheriff. “There will be no mob justice today,” the boy in the theater says proudly, echoing the actor playing Reeves. “Trust in the law,” the boy says, just as an explosion hurls him and his family into unrelenting chaos.
