Such admirers acknowledged Mussolini’s success in “saving” Italy not only from bankruptcy after the Great War, but from a Bolshevik takeover. On October 28, 1922, the King — by some accounts, fearful of a civil war — invited Mussolini to form a government. By the end of the decade, Italy’s diverse political left, made up of socialists, communists, and anarchists, had been eviscerated.
