Mr Morgan met Prince Charles four years ago when the scriptwriter was presented with a CBE for his services to drama after being named in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. Fortunately the ceremony in February 2016 at the Palace was before The Crown made its debut on Netflix later that year. In comments published in The New York Times, he recalled being ushered into the Palace ballroom, where Prince Charles, flanked by an equerry, was handing out the medals. ‘So you’re a scriptwriter?’ the Prince of Wales said as Mr Morgan stepped forward to receive his honour. Whereupon, Prince Charles is said to have joked: ‘I tend to think it’s not what you leave in but what you leave out that’s most important.’Or what you make up and put in, the Prince might now ruefully say.
