How can we trust the top cyclists if they can’t even trust each other?


Anyone who watches the fly-on-the-wall documentary Code Yellow about Team Jumbo-Visma’s attempt to win last year’s Tour de France will end up wondering what exactly happened at the end. Code Yellow was aired on Dutch TV and in the closing scenes, two Jumbo-Visma riders Primoz Roglic and Tom Dumoulin question the credibility of Tadej Pogacar’s Tour-winning time-trial performance in the penultimate stage. Going into that 22.5-mile race against the clock, Pogacar trailed Roglic by 57 seconds. Few considered he had any chance of overturning that deficit, even if the time-trial ended with a challenging climb to La Planche des Belles Filles. At their national time-trial championships two months before, Pogacar had just got the better of his compatriot.
