The major U.S. stock indexes closed mostly higher Wednesday, led by gains in energy and industrial companies. Strong company earnings helped lift the market, giving the S&P 500 its third gain in as many days. On Wednesday:The S&P 500 index rose 2.25 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,708.64. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 3.76 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,583.56. The Russell 2000 is up 48.05 points, or 3.1 percent.
