But they’re still Christian principles. It was driven by Pope Gregory VII, who wanted to liberate the church from state power. The UN Declaration of Human Rights, though never mentioning God, is a Christian document through and through. But the fact that many Christians betrayed Christian principles doesn’t make those principles any less Christian. It was a normal part of the classical world, so normal that even St Paul accepted it as a reality of life.
