At this time of year gorse is particularly fragrant. There are three species of gorse in the UK, all blooming at various times. This brought about the old country saying, when “gorse is out of blossom, kissing is out of fashion”. Gorse will often be found in coastal areas, wasteland, heath and mountain areas. The plant is valued by wildlife, with its dense thorny cover providing ideal protection for nesting birds.
