How two faulty vehicles sparked $1.4m Tongariro fires a month apart

Investigators managed to locate a vehicle about 400m from the site of the fire’s origin, on the opposite side of the road, hidden from sight. The November fire was likely ignited by a vehicle losing a wheel and causing the undercarriage to scrape along the road producing sparks. There was damage to the underside of the vehicle “and evidence of metal components being subjected to high temperature”.
